One of the oldest Jewish congregations in the south, and the third oldest in the nation. Its first members included the Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jewish settlers who came to Georgia aboard the William and Sarah just a few months after Oglethorpe. Congregation Mickve Israel received a perpetual charter from Governor Edward Telfair in 1790. Gothic in design (unusual for a synagogue), this building was consecrated in 1878. Of special interest in the synagogue's museum is the 15th century Torah brought over by the early settlers. For more information please follow the link
